What
is Pilates?
Developed by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses
on using both the mind and body to achieve optimum performance.
Pilates is a controlled form of exercise that aims to strengthen the
body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to
improve fitness and wellbeing. |
Pilates not painkillers best cure for back pain
Taking drugs for back pain is largely pointless, an overview of research
has concluded. Anti-inflammatory pills such as ibuprofen are widely
used as a first choice for patients with lower back pain. However,
scientists found that they made so little difference that most people
would not notice the effect. Exercise is usually recommended instead,
which for some patients could include Pilates, yoga or stretching.

and fitness, from beginners to elite athletes. |
Improve
balance and coordination
We rely heavily on balance and coordination for everything we do in
our busy daily lives.
We require both static and dynamic balance to function safely and
effectively.
The ability to maintain a controlled body position whilst performing
a task is essential to our every-day functioning.
Coordination is a complex skill requiring good balance coupled with
strength and agility.
Pilates exercises help to increase core strength, aiding balance and
coordination. |

Pilates Principles |
Concentrate |
Focusing on mind-body awareness establishes
a connection with your body and you gain more benefits from
your workouts. |
Breathing |
Control your breathing with deep exhalations
as you perform each Pilates exercise.
This helps activate your muscles and keeps you focused. |
Centering |
Paying attention to the core muscles will
help all your muscles function and develop more efficiently. |
Posture |
Correct posture ensures you gain the most
benefit to keep your body healthy.
Perform each Pilates exercise slowly and precisely with correct
posture. |
Control |
Control, rather than intensity or repetition,
is key to performing Pilates exercises correctly.
All Pilates movements should be performed with precision to
gain the maximum benefit. |
Flow |
Pilates movements should be smooth and graceful.
Try to exercise with the grace of a dancer or gymnast. |
